Mekka Traffic's Stockholm based tram subsidiary AB Stockholms Spårvägar wins the contract to operate Stockholm’s tram network.

On May 23, 2023, Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL), the Stockholm public transport authority announced that AB Stockholms Spårvägar, a Mekka Traffic company, has been awarded the E43 contract for the operation of the Tvärbanan, Nockebybanan, Saltsjöbanan, Spårväg City and Lidingöbanan tramway lines. The award means that AB Stockholms Spårvägar will continue to run traffic on the Spårväg City and Lidingö lines and will take over the operation of the Tvärbanan, Nockebybanan and Saltsjöbanan lines, which are currently operated by VR.

The contract extends over 10 years with traffic start in August 2024. The contract has a total value of approximately SEK 5.6-6.6 billion and includes traffic operations, property management, and vehicle and track maintenance for all five lines. In total, this involves over 100 vehicles, 78 stations, and 150,000 passengers per day. The depots and fleet are provided by SL.

Per Thorsell, CEO of Mekka Traffic Group, said: “with collaborative efforts from AB Stockholms Spårvägar’s team and Mekka Traffic’s tender team, we have executed a diligent preparation and successful presentation of our traffic solutions. We take great pride in the trust that has been placed upon our business by Stockholm Region and look forward to delivering attractive and reliable public transport services to our existing and future new passengers.”
